Randal Corsen - piano
Randal was born on Curaçao (Dutch Caribbean) on August 13th, 1972. He is a great- great grandson of the well-known local poet/pianist/composer Joseph Sickman Corsen (1853-1911), who was a great composer of Antillean classical music.
Starting with piano lessons at the age of nine, Randal focused mainly on classical and Antillean folklore music and has given various solo recitals on his native island, where he is a very popular performer.
At the age of seventeen he left to The Netherlands, where he studied music at the Brabants Conservatorium, and got deeply interested in jazz and Latin American music. Graduating cum laude in 1995, he obtained his teaching degree in music, followed in 1997 by his masters (cum laude) in jazz music.
Over the last decade, Corsen, who still lives in The Netherlands, has proven his special skills in the jazz and Latin music scene in both The Netherlands and Curaçao. He received high praise for his work as a pianist, composer and arranger for his critically acclaimed debut album Evolushon, for the two Edison-award nominated albums of jazz vocalist Izaline Calister, which he also co-produced, and for his compositions and performance on the debut album of Bye-Ya!
Randal has been called "A master blender of Antillean and other Latin American rhythms with Jazz harmonies" for the original way he blends jazz with Latin American music. He leads his own latin-jazz trio, and he previously worked with various jazz and world music artists and groups such as Izaline Calister, Denise Jannah, Ronald Snijders, Gerardo Rosales, Roy Hargrove, David Sánchez, Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and the Van Merwijk-Corsen-Vierdag Trio.
